German ambassador ANNELINA BERBOCK was in Niger as part of a trip of the Sahel area to enhance Germany’s ties with regional authorities.

After arriving in Niamey, Baerbock visited with the country’s president Mohamed Bazoum, who was particularly interested in discussing terrorism and climate change.

“As German Foreign Minister, I am very pleased that, in addition to the major issue of climate protection, where we as Germany want to provide strong support in the next few years, and also want to support security, that education is such a major topic for the president, and we will provide support, because education is the most important thing for young people, and that also unites our two countries.”

Her arrival in the Sahel area comes at a critical time for Europeans. France’s decision to pull its soldiers out of Mali in response to the advent of Russian private military firms started a chain reaction. This week, the block decided to suspend training soldiers in the area.

Hassoumi Massaoudou also met with Baerbock and reminded her that Berlin had provided 100 million euros in aid to the displaced people in the region.
