A large steel factory in Mariupol, where the city’s final defenders and some residents are holed up, was pounded by Russian forces on Wednesday, according to a local official.
Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin claiming there was no need to storm the Azovstal complex after declaring victory in Mariupol, an assistant to the city mayor, Petro Andryushchenko, said air attacks on the factory had not stopped.
Air attacks on Azovstal are not subsiding. No ceasefire, but attempts to storm again and again. Despite the statements by Putin, “Andryushchenko wrote on the Telegram.
“At the same time, street fighting continues again in the sector between the Azovstal plant’s management buildings and the street.”
Since Russian soldiers entered Ukraine on February 24, most of Mariupol has been damaged by Russian artillery and siege, according to local officials, and roughly 100,000 inhabitants remain in the city. Hundreds of combatants and civilians are said to be trapped inside the massive steel mill.
The situation in Mariupol, a major port on the Sea of Azov, has been described by Ukrainian officials as a “humanitarian catastrophe.”
Andryushchenko stated that no agreements had been made on Wednesday’s attempt to evacuate residents from Mariupol. Attempts to organise a truce to allow inhabitants to evacuate the city have failed in the past.
Russia claims that its “special military operation” in Ukraine is targeting people, and both sides blame each other for the inability to construct humanitarian corridors.
