Putin’s Ukraine red line endangers peace accord

LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has the “political space” to cease his invasion of Ukraine, owing in part to domestic censorship.
Given the massive Russian backing for what he is doing, and given the apparent obliviousness of the Russian media about what is really happening in Ukraine, the paradox is that Putin has far more political space to back down (and) withdraw,” Johnson told TalkTV.
Russia claims that its invasion of Ukraine was a “military operation” and has threatened to imprison anybody who claims otherwise.
As a consequence, Johnson believes Putin will be able to convince the Russian people that the operation in Ukraine has been “accomplished” and is “technically a success.”
As the West provides more sophisticated equipment to the Ukrainian side, Russia has repeatedly warned that the combat in Ukraine might escalate into a nuclear catastrophe.
Despite the nuclear danger, Johnson believed that the West did not need to make compromises.
“I think he (Putin) has far more political space than people worry about. People say we have to make a concession, we have to worry about what Putin might do because of the risk of his defeat.
“I think he has got a lot of space, he has got a lot of room for manoeuvre.”
