An Iraqi court has given the death penalty to a Daesh member accused of orchestrating a 2021 bomb blast in a busy Baghdad market that killed 32 people.

It was the city’s first big suicide attack in three years, bringing an end to a period of relative peace following Iraq’s declaration of victory over the terrorist organization in late 2017.

The unnamed guy was convicted guilty of preparing the January 2021 double suicide bombing in Baghdad’s Tayaran Square, which killed 110 people and injured 110 more.

The “main culprit” of the incident has been punished by a Baghdad court, according to the Supreme Judicial Council. He admitted to being a member of Daesh since 2012 and equipping the two suicide attackers.

According to the Interior Ministry, one of the attackers gathered a crowd by claiming to be unwell before detonating his explosives belt.

As additional individuals arrived to assist the casualties, the second suicide bomber detonated his explosives.

Iraq routinely condemns people to death, mainly for terrorist or murder convictions.

Amnesty International, based in London, reported at least 17 executions in Iraq in 2021, down from 50 the previous year, but stated death sentences “more than tripled from 2020.”

In April, eight people were sentenced to death in two trials, four over a car bombing and four for murder.

The last major Daesh attack in the capital came in July 2021, when a bomb ripped through a crowded market in the Sadr City suburb, killing more than 30 people.

Daesh has “maintained the ability to launch attacks at a steady rate in Iraq, including hit-and-run operations, ambushes, and roadside bombs,” a UN report said in January.

Three teenagers and three policemen were shot dead in northern Iraq as they put out a crop fire last week, an attack that officials blamed on Daesh.
