Zelensky addressed Israeli Prime Minister about Russian Foreign Minister’s “scandalous” remarks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett over Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s “scandalous” statements claiming Hitler had Jewish ancestors.

In his nighttime speech on Wednesday, Zelensky stated that he called Bennett to congratulate him on Israel’s Independence Day and to inform him of the situation in Mariupol, Ukraine’s southernmost city, and eastern Ukraine.

“We also discussed the scandalous and absolutely inadmissible statements by the Russian Foreign Minister who insulted the whole world,” the Ukrainian President said.

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s allegation that its invasion of Ukraine is part of attempt to “de-Nazify” the nation in an interview with Italian television on Sunday.

The foreign minister ridiculed Zelensky’s Jewishness, saying: “He [Zelensky] puts forward an argument: what kind of Nazism can they have if he is a Jew. I may be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood. It means absolutely nothing. The wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews.”

The Israeli government was outraged by Lavrov’s words, and the Russian Ambassador to Israel was summoned immediately.
