Firefighters and troops looked for survivors in the wreckage of a shopping centre in central Ukraine on Tuesday after a Russian missile attack that was denounced by the West and the UN killed at least 16 people.

Following Monday’s attack on the crowded mall in Kremenchuk, southeast of Kyiv, relatives of the missing formed a line outside the hotel where rescue teams had set up a base.

Two Russian missiles struck the mall, killing more than 1,000 people inside, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. According to Ukraine’s emergency services, at least 16 persons were killed and 59 were injured.

“This is not an accidental hit, this is a calculated Russian strike exactly onto this shopping centre,” Zelenskiy said in an evening video address. He said the death count could rise.

According to the prosecutor general’s office in Ukraine, more than 40 people have been reported missing.

Ludmyla Mykhailets, a 43-year-old patient at Kremenchuk’s state hospital, claimed that she was shopping with her husband when the bomb launched her into the air.

“My body was pelted with splinters as I flew head first. The entire area was crumbling, “She spoke.

Mykola, her 45-year-old husband, who was bleeding through a bandage covering his head, said, “It was horrible.

Russia has not responded to the strike, but its deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, accused Ukraine of exploiting the situation to win support before the NATO military alliance’s summit on June 28–30.

“One should wait for what our Ministry of Defence will say, but there are too many striking discrepancies already,” Polyanskiy wrote on Twitter.

Tuesday’s meeting of the UN Security Council has been requested by Ukraine in the wake of the assault. Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the U.N., called the missile strike “deplorable.”

At a conference in Germany, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies described the act as “abominable.”

In a joint statement that was tweeted by the German government spokeswoman, they stated that “Russian President Putin and those responsible will be called to account.”
