Ukraine announced on Monday that its soldiers have retreated from the city center of Severodonetsk, where conflict with Russia has raged for several weeks.

“With artillery assistance, the enemy conducted assault operations in the city of Severodonetsk, partially succeeded, and forced our soldiers away from the city centre,” the Ukrainian military stated on Facebook.

Sergiy Gaiday, the local governor, stated that “the Russians had some success at night” in the city.

They “pushed our troops out of the city’s centre and are continuing to destroy it,” he wrote on Facebook.

Gaiday stated that Moscow was “accumulating more and more equipment” to encircle Severodonetsk and neighbouring Lysychansk.
