Major airports on the East Coast were pummeling by thunderstorms on Thursday, resulting in several flight cancellations that continued into the next day.

According to the flight tracking website Flight Aware, more than 1,500 flights in the United States had been canceled as of Friday at 9:30 p.m. ET. Reagan National Airport outside of Washington, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia Airport in New York once again ranked first for cancellations.

One of the worst days for flight cancellations in the previous six weeks was Thursday when airlines throughout the country canceled 1,248 flights. 9 percent of Southwest Airlines’ Thursday schedule, or 370 flights, were canceled. Southwest postponed 1,800 more flights or 46% of their Thursday itinerary.

Southwest Airlines issued a statement on Friday stating, “We are working through a range of weather-related problems that are affecting a number of our larger operations around the country this week.”

According to FlightAware, there were more than 7,700 recorded delays on Friday in the US.
