Several people were hurt in the crash. People were taken from the site of the crash to a nearby building so they could stay warm. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Friday that at least 46 cars were involved in a huge crash that killed four people and hurt many others.

The accident took place in Erie County on the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike. At 11:25 p.m., at least 12 hours after the crash, a section of the westbound lanes of the turnpike reopened, but the eastbound lanes remained closed.

Late Friday, 15 commercial vehicles were being moved off of the turnpike, and the highway patrol said that “white-out conditions are still present.”

The agency said that buses were used to take people from the crash site to a nearby building where they could stay warm.

Photos posted on Twitter showed a black pickup truck on top of the pileup. Other pictures showed semitrucks that had been badly damaged and several cars that had been crushed between a median and a trailer.

In a video about the accident posted on Twitter, Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Purpura said, “The weather outside is not good, and there are often whiteout conditions, which make it unsafe to travel.”

Purpura asked people to stay home or take extra care if they had to drive, like driving more slowly and leaving more space between cars.

Authorities did not say who died or what happened to the people who were hurt. It’s not clear if the weather had anything to do with the crash.
