Exiled Wagner chief Prigozhin returns to Russia while snubbing Putin

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who is known as an ally of Vladimir Putin, stated on Thursday that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, was present in the Russian city of St Petersburg.

Observers believe that Prigozhin’s recent actions are a complete disregard for the agreement he had made with Russian authorities following his short-lived rebellion against the Kremlin.

In accordance with the agreement mediated by the President of Belarus, the Wagner chief had agreed to leave Russia and seek exile in Belarus to avoid prosecution.

During the turbulent days of the rebellion, the mercenaries claimed to have seized control of certain military facilities in two Russian cities, with a significant number of trained fighters heading towards Moscow.

In response to the mutiny, the Kremlin deployed heavily armed troops to the streets of the Russian capital, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an impending civil war.

However, the insurrection was swiftly quelled after Russian authorities reached a deal with the Wagner chief, which involved his relocation to neighboring Belarus.
