PM Rishi Sunak plans for uphill by-election as MP Chris Pincher resigns

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is confronted with yet another by-election test following the resignation of a lawmaker who had been suspended for allegations of groping two men.

Chris Pincher, who now serves as an independent, declared his departure from the House of Commons on Thursday. He had faced suspension from the Conservative Party in July 2022 due to the allegations of inappropriate behavior.

The by-election to fill Pincher’s seat is scheduled for October 19, coinciding with another by-election to replace former culture minister Nadine Dorries.

These two by-elections pose additional challenges for Sunak, especially in light of his Conservative Party’s loss in two out of three parliamentary seats contested in July.

In addition to the by-elections, Sunak faces an internal challenge within his party, as a group of Conservative MPs have submitted a letter expressing no confidence in his leadership. If 54 MPs submit such letters, a vote of no confidence will be initiated.
