Brazil experienced its highest-ever temperature of 44.8°C (112.6°F) in the town of Araçuaí, located in the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais, amidst a severe heatwave.
The record-breaking heat on Sunday has been linked to the El Niño phenomenon and climate change. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) reported that Araçuaí surpassed the previous national record of 44.7°C set in 2005.
Red alerts have been issued across Brazil, and increased energy consumption has been reported as people attempt to cope with the extreme heat.
The heatwave led to the cancellation of a Taylor Swift concert in Rio de Janeiro after a fan fell ill and died.
The average temperature in Brazil has been above the historical average from July to October, according to recent research.
