More than 25,000 Muslims, including individuals like school principal Nafis Ansari, have volunteered as “Modi Mitrs” to support the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections.

The BJP aims to reach out to Muslim voters, particularly women, using its economic record and plans for religion-agnostic laws on inheritance and gender rights.

Despite accusations of promoting anti-Islamic sentiments, the BJP seeks to target underprivileged Muslim voters in key seats. The party’s Muslim outreach strategy includes focusing on 65 seats with at least 30% Muslim voter population, aiming to increase its Muslim vote share from 9% to 16-17%.

The Modi Mitrs, community leaders and influencers, play a crucial role in spreading the BJP’s economic message, emphasizing welfare policies benefiting all communities.

The BJP’s outreach strategy encompasses economic appeals, addressing Pasmanda Muslims, marginalized members of the community, and promoting plans for religion-agnostic laws to garner support.

The BJP’s website indicates its critique of secularism, framing it as “minority appeasement” at the cost of the majority. The BJP’s plan to reform personal laws is particularly highlighted among Muslim women, pledging to end discriminatory practices in marriage age, polygamy, and inheritance.

The party aims to bridge the gap and gain support among Muslims, emphasizing development and economic issues over religious and identity-based politics.

While critics argue that the BJP’s strategy is aimed at dividing and ruling, the party contends that it is addressing long-neglected concerns and focusing on development issues. Despite allegations of demonizing Muslims for its hardline base, the BJP’s dual strategy involves showing a soft corner to Muslim women and portraying positivity to Pasmandas, marginalized Muslim communities.

The party’s outreach has raised concerns among opposition leaders, who emphasize the need for countering the BJP’s strategy with comprehensive policies.
