Tuesday marked a significant night for US politics while the White House wasn’t at stake – that’s coming up next year. Voters in several states headed to the polls to determine their governors and legislative control, with some contemplating changes to abortion rights. Although ballots are still being counted and results are coming in, here’s what we’ve learned so far:

• Abortion continues to be a prominent issue:

Ohio voters supported a constitutional amendment that secures abortion rights in the state. This vote served as a test to gauge whether abortion rights will remain a crucial issue in the upcoming elections.

It’s worth noting that the Supreme Court revoked nationwide abortion rights last year, and early indications suggest that this issue remains a motivating factor for voters.

Virginia, for example, saw abortion play a pivotal role in the campaign and discussions leading up to Tuesday night. Democrats are projected to retain a narrow grip on the state Senate, enabling them to thwart Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s efforts to impose stricter abortion regulations.

• Democrats can win in Trump territory:

Kentucky overwhelmingly backed Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, and Democrats seldom secure statewide victories in the state. Nevertheless, Governor Andy Beshear comfortably secured re-election against his Republican rival, Daniel Cameron.

Cameron, a protege and former aide to Senator Mitch McConnell, attempted to link Beshear to an unpopular President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. His emphasis on issues like inflation, crime, and social matters made the race tighter in the final weeks.

However, Beshear, consistently one of the nation’s most popular governors in polls, maintained a strong focus on local and state issues. Building on our first takeaway, it’s noteworthy that he depicted his opponent as an extremist on the abortion issue.

His message of looking beyond partisan divides and embracing those who reject divisive politics could serve as a model for the Democratic Party in traditionally Republican states.

• Transition from incarceration to politics is possible:

Yusef Salaam, as a teenager, was one of the five black and Hispanic youths wrongfully accused of raping a jogger in Central Park in 1989, a case that gripped New York City and led to the group being known as the Central Park Five.

Salaam, who was 15 at the time, spent several years in prison before a serial rapist confessed to the crime, leading to the group’s convictions being overturned. On Tuesday, this author and activist secured a seat on the New York City Council.

After winning the Democratic primary that virtually ensured his election, he spoke about his experience in “a system that was trying to make me believe that I was my ancestors’ wildest nightmare” in June.

He added, “For me, this means that we can really become our ancestors’ wildest dreams.”
