China’s military announced that a US combat ship had unlawfully entered the waters near the Second Thomas Shoal, a contested atoll in the South China Sea.
“The US seriously undermined regional peace and stability,” said a spokesperson for China’s Southern Theater of Operations in a statement.
The spokesperson further asserted that the US deliberately disturbed the tranquility of the South China Sea, flagrantly infringing upon China’s sovereignty.
China is entangled in territorial disputes with multiple neighboring countries regarding its expansive claims in the South China Sea.
Recent months have witnessed several clashes with Philippine vessels, along with protests against US naval patrols in disputed regions.
The spokesperson highlighted that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army had mobilized maritime troops to track and oversee the movements of the US ship.
They emphasized that troops in the region remain on high alert at all times to staunchly safeguard national sovereignty.
On a separate note, the Philippine Coast Guard responded to a concerning surge in the presence of Chinese maritime militia vessels within the country’s exclusive economic zone.
Two vessels were deployed in the South China Sea on Sunday to address the alarming situation.
