Indonesia, a long-standing advocate for Palestine, has declared its commitment to tripling its contributions to the UN relief agency for Palestine. The Southeast Asian nation has been an unwavering supporter of Palestine. They have driven its constitution’s mandate to oppose colonialism and advocate for Palestinian statehood.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi reiterated this commitment during the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Geneva. The move signals Indonesia’s dedication to strengthening global solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

“Indonesia reaffirms its support to strengthen political solidarity and humanitarian support for Palestine, including by increasing (our) contribution to UNRWA threefold,” Marsudi said. She will also speak on the issue of Palestine at a UN high-level event on human rights.

Indonesia, along with 101 other nations, supported a UN Security Council resolution urging an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Unfortunately, the resolution faced a veto from the United States during a meeting held in New York City last week.

“The global community cannot continue to be at the mercy of a few countries and watch helplessly the atrocities and killings of women and children in Gaza,” Marsudi said in a statement issued after the UN vote.

Since the militant attack, Israel’s military actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 18,000 Palestinians. According to a recent study, the proportion of civilian casualties in Gaza reached around 61%.

This ongoing violence in Gaza has highlighted the urgent need for reform within the United Nations. Teuku Rezasyah, an international relations expert from Padjajaran University in West Java, emphasizes the necessity for such reform. He suggests that Indonesia, in its support for Palestine, should actively contribute to achieving this goal.

“The issue of Palestine is part of our constitutional mandate, that independence is the right of all nations and we must abolish colonialism. These are the keywords we have always used, and Indonesia has proven its stance. Next, Indonesia must build a coalition with like-minded countries,” Rezasyah told the media.
