A gunman killed three people and wounded one on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus Wednesday afternoon before being shot and killed by police. The shooting, which began around 11:45 AM local time, originated on the fourth floor of Beam Hall.

Law enforcement identified the suspect as Anthony “Tony” Polito, a former college professor in his sixties. Polito reportedly applied for a job at UNLV but was not hired. Police are investigating the motive but believe he may have had a connection to someone on campus.

Responding officers quickly engaged with the suspect, preventing further casualties. One person suffered a gunshot wound and is in stable condition. Four others were treated for panic attacks, and two police officers sustained minor injuries during the search for victims.

UNLV President Brian Sandoval called the incident “an unimaginably sad and shocking day for our entire state.” The university will be closed for the week, and a reunification center has been set up for concerned families.

President Biden addressed the shooting in a statement, calling it the “latest college campus to be terrorized by a horrific act of gun violence.” He urged Congress to take action on gun control measures, including an assault weapons ban and universal background checks.

The shooting has left the UNLV community shaken and grieving. This tragedy underscores the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in the United States and the need for comprehensive solutions.
