Former US President Donald Trump has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging his Republican party contender Nikki Haley to a cognitive ability test just days before the New Hampshire primary. In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Trump expressed confidence in his ability to outscore Haley, who has been critical of his mental abilities and suitability for the White House.
Trump asserted, “I think I’m a lot sharper than her. I would sit down right now and take an aptitude test, and it would be my result against her result, and she’s not going to win, not gonna even come close to winning.”
The 77-year-old former president, who is seeking a return to the Oval Office, reiterated his call for cognitive tests for political leaders, emphasizing the importance of having an intelligent person as president. Trump claimed to have aced two cognitive tests, one during his time in office and another more recently.
“I aced it twice. I aced it. But I would say that, you know, I’ve actually called for a cognitive test for anybody running for president because I actually think that’s a good idea. It’d be nice to have an intelligent person be president,” Trump stated.
The former US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has been emphasizing the need for mental fitness evaluations for political leaders aged over 75 during her electoral rallies. This challenge from Trump comes amid a backdrop of ongoing criticism from Haley and President Joe Biden over the former president’s recent remarks, including a moment where he seemed to confuse Haley with former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The issue of cognitive fitness has been a recurring theme in American politics, and Trump’s willingness to undergo a mental fitness test adds a new dimension to the political discourse leading up to the New Hampshire primary. The outcome of this challenge could potentially influence voters’ perceptions of the candidates as they head to the polls.
