First day of the Year in Karachi saw temperature dropping as low as nine degrees Celsius and Karachiiets struggled to keep themselves warm in the face of unprecedented cold weather.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department Director Sardar Sarfraz, the lowest temperature of Karachi for this winter season was recorded on Wednesday.

The Met Office has forecast 8 to 10 °C as the lowest temperature for Thursday and 9 to 11 °C for Friday, January 3, 2020.

Cold wave also continued to grip most parts of the country with icy winds shivering Skardu at -18°C.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, continental air prevails most parts of the country, specially Skardu.

A shallow westerly wave is likely to affect western and upper parts of the country from Wednesday, MeT office said.

Light rain with thunderstorm and snowfall over mountains expected at isolated places in Northwest Baluchistan, upper hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Dense fog is likely to prevail in most plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh while in few plain areas of KP during the morning and night hours.

Cold and dry weather expected in most areas of the country while very cold in upper areas.

The lowest minimum temperature recorded in the country this morning was minus 18 Celsius degree in Skardu.

-11 Celsius degree in Bagrote, minus 9°C in Gupis, minus 8°C in Astore and minus 07°C in Kalat.

Whereas, -05°C in Parachinar, -04°C in Hunza, Gilgit and Bannu, and -03°C in Kalam, Rawalakot, Chakwal, Quetta and Malam Jabba.
