Sindh High Court judges express dismay to see pictures of Karachi's garbage piles

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the petitioner to make Solid Waste Management a party to the petition against filth, filth and garbage dumps in the city and sought reply from Deputy Secretary Local Government Department and others at the next hearing.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Khadim Hussain M Sheikh and Justice Arshad Hussain Khan held a hearing on the issue of piles of filth and garbage in Karachi. The judges of Sindh High Court were saddened to see the pictures of garbage and filth. Justice Khadim Hussain Sheikh immediately summoned Sindh Local Government Secretary.

Justice Khadim Hussain M Sheikh remarked that seeing the condition of Karachi, the heart is in terrible grief. Is this what did with the biggest city? When political parties are not in power, they say that powers will do two things and when they get power, they forget their power and responsibility.

The Sindh government’s lawyer argued that it was the responsibility of DMCs and KMCs to pick up garbage from Karachi. Justice Khadim Hussain M. Sheikh remarked that the people of KMC keep saying that we do not get funds and we are not allowed to work.

Justice Khadim Hussain in a conversation with the lawyer of Sindh government said that when you do not give funds to KMC, why don’t you work yourself? Justice Khadim Hussain remarked that filth and garbage in Karachi will one day become Pandemic.

The court questioned the deputy secretary as to whose responsibility it was to clean up Karachi’s garbage. The Deputy Secretary said that it is the responsibility of MCs and DMCs to clean up Karachi’s garbage. If KMC and DMC do not work, the Sindh government can take legal action.

The court, while expressing anger at the Deputy Secretary Local Government, remarked that there is so much garbage in Karachi, so what action have you taken against those responsible? Additional Advocate General Safdar Ali said that garbage disposal is also the job of solid waste management but it has not been made a party in the petition.

The court directed the petitioner to make solid waste management a party. The court sought reply from the Deputy Secretary Local Government Department and others at the next hearing and adjourned the hearing till July 29. The court remarked that garbage should be collected from different areas and disposed of.
