Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict Could Turn Into Regional War, Iranian President Warns

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that an armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia could escalate into a regional war.

According to reports from the Iranian capital, Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a statement broadcast on state television on Wednesday, October 7, that the threat of an armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia could escalate into a regional war.

Iranian President Rouhani said that Azerbaijan and Armenia are both neighbours of Iran and there are reports that fighters from Syria and Libya have been sent to fight in Nagorno-Karabakh. This allegation is being made especially by Armenia.

President Rouhani said that we must pay close attention to the fact that this conflict does not turn into a regional war and engulf the entire region. The focus of our efforts is peace and we want the path of peace to be taken to restore peace and stability in the region.

Iranian President Rouhani has said that the Tehran government will never allow “other countries to send fighters to areas near our national borders under various pretexts”.

Hassan Rouhani made the remarks in the wake of claims that Turkey, Azerbaijan’s ally in the conflict, had allegedly sent pro-Turkish militia fighters from Syria and Libya to Azerbaijan to fight in Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey denies such allegations against it and said them as baseless.

Note that fierce clashes continue between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces in the border region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The occupation of this Muslim area by Christian separatists led to the regional conflict that erupted after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
