ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday called on the international community to hold India accountable for the usurpation of the rights of Kashmiris.

In a statement on Youm-e-Istehsal, the PML-N president expressed solidarity with the people of occupied Kashmir on the second anniversary of India’s illegal unilateral revocation of the valley’s UN-recognised disputed status.

“India has turned occupied Kashmir into an open jail while the UN Security Council did nothing but hold inconclusive, inconsequential meetings behind closed doors that ended up achieving nothing,” said Shahbaz. He added that India has oppressed the Kashmiris in every imaginable way.

PML-N president said India tried to pressure the Kashmiris psychologically but it failed to break their resolve and spirit.

He pointed out that India has intensified its cruelties in Kashmir since August 5, 2019, yet the UN has made New Delhi the president of the UNSC.

“India has been given charge of an institution, whose resolutions it has been flouting for decades. The events of August 5, 2019, raise a big question [mark] on the credibility of international institutions like the UN” said Shahbaz.

The opposition leader said Pakistan should have tabled a resolution in the UN on August 5 to ensure implementation of all UN resolutions especially those concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
