LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) visited the Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) to review the progress on the project, a statement said.
K-IV general manager projects (South), K-IV project director and representative of consultants were also present on the occasion.
Expressing satisfaction over the pace of work, the chairman said Wapda has completed revised design of K-IV project in accordance with the timelines.
“The process for awarding construction works is also in progress. Following award of the contract, the construction work on K-IV project will commence in the next three to four months. Wapda is committed to complete the project in October 2023 to start supplying 650 million gallon/day additional water to Karachi under the Prime Minister’s Karachi Package,” he said.
Earlier, the project was being constructed by the Sindh government. The federal government, under an arrangement with the province, has taken up the implementation of the project as part of the prime minister’s package for Karachi and directed Wapda to take over the responsibility of constructing the project.
Construction proposed on Nai Gaj Dam
Meanwhile, the Wapda chairman also visited Nai Gaj Dam project being constructed on Gaj River 65km northwest of Dadu.
Speaking on the occasion, the chairman said the authority has successfully started construction work on the stalled Nai Gaj project by removing the bottlenecks.
Appreciating the project management, he expressed the hope that Nai Gaj Dam would be completed in 2024.
On completion, the dam will have a gross storage capacity of 300,000 acres with the command area of 28,800 acres of land.
In the last leg of his Sindh visit, the Wapda chairman called on Sindh chief secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah and discussed K-IV, Nai Gaj, Sindh Barrage and Hub Dam projects
