Firefighters are still battling a blaze in Kyle of Lochalsh, some 24 hours after getting the report.

Four fire engines from Broadford, Glenelg, Portree, and Dunvegan remain on the scene, as do two volunteer units from Spean Bridge and Cromarty.

According to a fire spokeswoman, the hillside fire has already expanded to around three miles in length, and a helicopter will be employed later this morning.

Firefighters are battling the blaze using hose reel jets, beaters, and backpack sprayers.

Crews have been on the site since approximately 10.20 a.m. yesterday after getting reports of a fire on a huge area of heather.

Six firefighters were initially dispatched to quell a 1.5-square-mile flame.

Three appliances stayed on the scene overnight to monitor the fire, and personnel resumed their operations this morning.
The fire, they claim, should not endanger vehicles because it is in the hills.

Firefighters also battled another wildfire on a moor near Lewis for more than seven hours yesterday.

The fire was spreading over the land on two fronts, and the shifting wind direction made it impossible to extinguish the flames.
