Japan stated Friday that it will no longer purchase Russian coal and that it has expelled eight Russian diplomats for “war crimes” in Ukraine.
The decision comes as Ukraine’s allies increase pressure on Moscow following reports that Russian forces murdered civilians in areas near Kyiv.
“Russian military have killed civilians and targeted nuclear installations, in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. These are atrocities that will never be forgiven “Fumio Kishida, Japan’s Prime Minister, told reporters.
“We will block Russian coal imports,” Kishida stated, promising to find alternatives and pleading with Japanese citizens for “understanding and collaboration.”
He listed other measures, such as fresh asset freezes and a restriction on Russian imports, including as equipment and vodka, and stated that Tokyo will support attempts to examine Moscow’s activities at the International Criminal Court.
Earlier this month, Japan’s foreign ministry confirmed the expulsion of eight Russian diplomats from the embassy and trade office.
Russia’s ambassador, Mikhail Yurievich Galuzin, is unaffected by the ruling.
