VLADIMIR Putin’s war plans have suffered a devastating setback as Russia’s military-industrial complex begins to feel the effects of sanctions.

In its ill-fated invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army suffered massive losses in both personnel and equipment. Putin’s forces are desperately restocking and replacing destroyed equipment in preparation for an anticipated new offensive in Ukraine’s east. Striking sanctions, on the other hand, have targeted Russia’s defense industry, which is heavily reliant on imported components from the West.

The Buk air missile system is the latest weapon to be affected by the import embargo, with production reportedly nearing a halt.

Lesia Vasylenko, a Ukrainian MP, tweeted: “Sanctions work! #Russia can no longer buy components for anti-air missile systems Buk and similar.

“Production levels dwindle to near-zero levels. This will eventually result in a decrease in attacks on #Ukraine.

The Buk is a fearsome mobile radar-guided surface-to-air missile system.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Eastern Ukraine in 2014 by a Buk missile, killing all on board, including a number of Britons.

A joint international investigation concluded that the missile was fired by rebels backed by Russia as the plane flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Western sanctions have also brought Russia’s Uralvogonzavod in Nizhny Tagil’s tank production to a halt.

The company, which is owned by the state corporation Rostec, is the world’s largest manufacturer of battle tanks.

Sergey Chemezov is the CEO of Rostec. He is a former KGB agent and high-ranking general who befriended Putin during their 1980s service in East Germany.

On Saturday, Margo Gontar, a Ukrainian journalist, broke the news of the factory’s closure.
