The criticism of the police reaction in the Texas elementary school shooting that killed 21 people grew on Sunday, with a Texas state lawmaker representing Uvalde claiming missteps by policemen may have resulted in additional fatalities.

In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Democratic state Sen. Roland Gutierrez recounted a discussion he had with a mother whose daughter died from a single gunshot, telling host Dana Bash that “these blunders may have contributed to the passing away of these children as well.”

“The first responder they ultimately spoke with stated that their child most likely bled out,” Gutierrez explained. “That tiny kid may have lived in that extra 30 to 40 minutes.” That young kid may still be alive.”

The police reaction to Tuesday’s massacre, which killed 19 kids and two instructors, has come under fire when it was discovered that cops remained on the site for more than an hour after receiving an initial volley of gunfire before engaging the gunman. According to officials, local police waited outside the classroom and did not make an immediate attempt to breach it, as is customary.

A Border Patrol tactical unit that confronted the gunman eventually killed him.

Gutierrez also questioned the lack of clarification on which law enforcement agency was in charge of the response timetable.

Gutierrez said he informed DPS’s superintendent that he didn’t think it was appropriate to blame the entire incident on the school district’s police.

“At the end of the day,” Gutierrez remarked, “everyone failed here.” “We failed these kids.”
