In the wake of the Punjab government’s recent crackdown on motorists driving without a valid license, the region has witnessed an unprecedented surge in driving license applications. Over the past 11 days, an astounding 63,000 women have sought to obtain their licenses, signaling a significant shift in driving culture. However, concerns are mounting as a staggering 80% of applicants failed the driving tests, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced education and training programs.

Officials reported that the surge in applications resulted in a remarkable 788% increase in driving license issuance in recent weeks. The past week alone saw more than 60,000 driving licenses issued to citizens. While this surge reflects a positive inclination towards compliance with traffic regulations, the high failure rate in the driving tests has prompted officials to reevaluate the current system.

Acknowledging the challenges, an official spoke to the media, stating that while thousands of women applied for licenses, the majority faced difficulties passing the driving tests. The official also admitted that the system requires further improvements to ensure a more comprehensive and effective evaluation of applicants’ driving skills.

The surge in applications has also brought to light concerns about the Punjab police’s approach to dealing with underage drivers. The Lahore High Court (LHC) recently heard a petition addressing this issue and subsequently sought responses from top officials, including the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab. The court’s intervention reflects the need for a balanced and fair approach in handling cases involving underage drivers, considering both legal and educational aspects.

As Punjab grapples with the aftermath of the license crackdown, it becomes evident that the surge in applications is not only a testament to increased awareness but also an urgent call for improvements in driving education and training programs. Authorities are now faced with the task of revisiting existing systems to ensure that aspiring drivers, especially women, are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the roads safely.

The current scenario underscores the importance of a collaborative effort between the government, law enforcement agencies, and educational institutions to develop comprehensive driving education programs. By addressing the shortcomings in the current system, Punjab can not only enhance road safety but also empower its citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to obtain and retain their driving licenses responsibly.
