Tesla CEO Elon Musk has once again startled those who closely monitor artificial intelligence (AI) developments, adjusting his forecast for when superhuman AI might emerge.

During a recent live-streamed interview on X (previously known as Twitter), Musk suggested that AI surpassing human intelligence could materialize by the end of the coming year, significantly sooner than his previous estimate of 2029.

This hastened timetable, however, comes with a caveat — the ongoing challenge of securing adequate resources. Last year, the bottleneck was a shortage of Nvidia chips essential for training robust AI models.

This year, attention has shifted to voltage transformers, another critical component. Looking ahead, the 52-year-old entrepreneur foresees the primary limitation within a couple of years to be the immense amount of electricity required to fuel these advanced AI systems.

In 2023, Musk voiced apprehensions about the potential risks associated with superintelligence, suggesting a five- to six-year timeframe before reaching that juncture.

He even proposed a pause in AI development if feasible, acknowledging the possibility of a “Terminator” scenario.

However, given the apparent impracticality of a pause, Musk seems to be placing his trust in “xAI,” a concept where explainable AI aids in guiding the progression of more sophisticated and hopefully benevolent forms of superintelligence.

Further igniting discussions, Musk recently asserted that his company’s chatbot Grok AI is already performing comparably to OpenAI’s GPT-4, another leading large language model in the industry.

With advancements unfolding at a rapid pace, Musk’s revised timeline for superhuman AI elicits both anticipation and apprehension about the future trajectory of AI development.
