Fashion Week in New York: At Prabal Gurung’s Show

For a fashion week show on Friday that explored the Buddhist concept of “anichya,” or impermanence, he installed a mirrored square runway at the main branch of the New York Public Library that reflected an extravagant blue light display.

Gurung was thinking of his homeland, Nepal, where he hasn’t been since before the pandemic, as he wore wool jackets with butterfly motifs, shades of saffron, burgundy, and dusty pink. To “silence everything,” he was inspired by a recent 10-day meditative retreat.

In a backstage interview, he told The Associated Press, “In Nepal, we talk about it all the time, what is present, and how soon it can go.” And there is actually a sense of optimism there, particularly in these trying times.
