Does a butterfly remember being a caterpillar in the past? How do we fill the brief intervals between happiness and despair, between beginning and end? Naturally, wearing moody designer clothes. This season, Prabal Gurung was very thoughtful. For a fashion week show on Friday that explored the Buddhist concept of “anichya,” or impermanence, he installed a mirrored square runway at the main branch of the New York Public Library that reflected an extravagant blue light display.

Gurung was thinking of his homeland, Nepal, where he hasn’t been since before the pandemic, as he wore wool jackets with butterfly motifs, shades of saffron, burgundy, and dusty pink. To “silence everything,” he was inspired by a recent 10-day meditative retreat.

In a backstage interview, he told The Associated Press, “In Nepal, we talk about it all the time, what is present, and how soon it can go.” And there is actually a sense of optimism there, particularly in these trying times.

He stated that one aspect of the concept was finding “hope in the dark places.” After the night, there is light.

This time, his silhouettes were sharper and longer. The idea of harmony was challenged by his asymmetry. He draped softly while simultaneously providing sharp angles. Wool coats, gliding skirts, and glitzy golds and crystals were all present.

In a nutshell, Gurung stated that for him, New York Fashion Week was a “magical, mystery journey.” a nighttime spiritual journey taken back to Nepal, an inner journey.

Moody, yes, but hopeful in turquoise and emerald silk organza, a black leather cropped jacket with a pink shearling collar and his butterfly print in a black and white high-low dress with a high neck, and another in sheer red and black.

A pink and scarlet embroidered cocoon coat and an oversized sweater knit with ivory and yellow butterflies were on display. But it has a lot of power,” Gurung stated.

On his 10-day vipassana retreat, where he was forbidden to read, use his phone, or exercise, everything grew. A painted lady butterfly landed on his window the third day, “and it gave me something to ponder,” he said.

According to Gurung, he wanted to embrace the idea that nothing is fixed and constant shifts should not be feared because he had grown up with “impermanence.” He stated that they must embrace and that he was dressed appropriately for the job.

His front-row guests included Kelsea Ballerini, who dazzled at the Grammys in a yellow gown by Gurung. Alyah Chanelle Scott and Becky G were with her.
