Musharraf treason case judgment is unethical and inhumane: DG ISPR

Earlier today, Islamabad special court issued the detail verdict of former military ruler General Retired Pervez Musharraf high treason case.

The court ordered death sentence to former president Pervez Musharraf against high treason case.

However, Justice Seth and Justice Karim voted for the death sentence and said that evidence presented proved that he committed a crime.

On behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, the prosecution team, led by Advocate Ali Zia Bajwa, preyed upon the court to amend the indictment against the former military ruler.

According to the verdict, Pervez Musharraf had violated the constitution on November 3, 2007.

Verdict stated that violation of constitution proved against Pervez Musharraf and he awarded death penalty under Article 6.

The high treason case against the former president for clamping the state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007, has been pending since December 2013.

The special court had announced that it would deliver its verdict in the case today.

However, the government’s prosecutor, Advocate Ali Zia Bajwa, said they had submitted three petitions today.

What is Article 6?

Article 6 of the Constitution says: “Any person who abrogates or subverts or suspends or hold in abeyance, or attempts or conspires to abrogate or subvert or suspend or hold in abeyance the Constitution by use of force or show force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.”

Pakistan Army Reaction

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, in a statement issued following the verdict in the high treason case against Musharraf , said decision received with lot of pain and anguish.

DG ISPR said an ex army chief who fought for country can never be a traitor.

“The due legal process seems to have been ignored including constitution of special court, denial of fundamental right of self defense, undertaking individual specific proceedings and concluding the case in haste.”

He said armed Forces of Pakistan expect justice will be dispensed according to Constitution.

Moreover, while doing a press conference DG ISPR stated Army is not just an institution but a family and we know how to maintain the honor and dignity of the country as well as the honor and dignity of our institution.
