Mobile, internet services Suspended Amidst TLP Sit-ins In Lahore

Following the chaos and violent protests by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) workers taking place in major cities of Pakistan, the Punjab home department has suspended mobile and internet services in various parts of Lahore.

The cellular phone networks and Internet service suspended due to security concerns following the sit-ins by the TLP workers in the provincial capital.

However, internet services have been suspended for three days in different areas of the country, including the Baldia Town area of Karachi.

The internet service providers said that internet service has been suspended on the directions of PTA.

Moreover, the party’s protests had obstructed traffic in various cities of the country since Monday after Lahore police had detained TLP Chief Saad Hussain Rizvi.

Earlier in the day, the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) has been declared null and void by the interior ministry here on Thursday.

The interior ministry has issued an official statement about the religious party in this regard.

Government Decides To Ban TLP

The federal government has decided to impose a ban on TLP for creating violence in the country after the party chief Saad Hussain Rizvi was arrested by Lahore police this week.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said that TLP will be put under a ban according to the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

He added, “TLP protesters prompted violence and snatched rifles from police and fired.”

“We are forwarding a summary to the Federal Cabinet to impose a ban on the TLP,” Rashid said, adding, “The government stood by the agreement signed with the party.”

What TLP Wants?

The deadline by the religious party concerns its demands from October last year, a history teacher who had shown blasphemous sketches of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in class was decapitated and his assailant shot dead by French police as they tried to arrest him.

Following the killing, President of France Emmanuel Macron pledged not to “give up cartoons” depicting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Prime Imran Khan as well as other leaders of Muslim countries had denounced the French premier’s comments while countrywide protests were held calling for a boycott of French products. Imran Khan after the incident and to date has voiced against the French move on the international forums.

According to the party, the present government expressed its inability to implement the agreement and wanted the TLP leadership to stop protesting.
