ISLAMABAD: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday telephoned President Dr Arif Alvi and sought support for the peace resolution

Referring to the ten-point peace formula, the Ukrainian president sought Pakistan’s support on the draft resolution being tabled in the United Nations General Assembly for ending the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

During the conversation, the president conveyed that Pakistan remained deeply concerned over the conflict in Ukraine.  He said that Pakistan supported a peaceful solution to the conflict in accordance with the UN Charter. He said that the contents of the draft resolution were being evaluated by the Government of Pakistan.

The two leaders discussed Pakistan-Ukraine political and economic ties, including energy and food security issues facing the developing world in the wake of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Both sides emphasized the need for enhancing economic and trade relations for the mutual benefit of the two countries. President Zelenskyy also extended an invitation to the President Alvi to visit Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly will vote this week on a resolution underscoring the urgency to find a lasting peace in Ukraine, one year after Moscow invaded its neighbor.

The text, drafted by Ukraine in consultation with allies and discussed with interested countries, will be put to a vote at the end of a special emergency session of the assembly.

It underscores the urgency to find “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations” and calls on United Nations members and international organizations to support that effort.

It reaffirms the UN’s “commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine” and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The text, which unlike a Security Council resolution would not create a binding law, demands Russia “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine.”

Kyiv hopes to garner the support of at least as many nations as in October, when 143 countries voted for a resolution condemning the annexation of several Ukrainian territories by Russia.
