ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission on Pakistan (ECP) and Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been unable to provide a date for conducting polls in the province.

The election commission has written a letter to KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali inviting him to the ECP headquarters in Islamabad to hold consultations on finalizing the election date

It said the governor’s visit will be an honour and they will be able to finalize the election date within a day.

In the absence of the Governor, the election commission formed a three-member committee to visit Peshawar and consult with the governor.

The ECP held an important meeting to review preparations for the upcoming elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

During the meeting, it was decided to write a letter to the Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for consultation on the provincial elections. The ECP decided to invite the governor to Islamabad for consultation.

The election commission will unable to approve the election schedule for polls in Punjab. The meetings has been called again on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali had earlier invited officials from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to finalize a date for the general elections.

The governor wrote a letter to the ECP and invited the officials to his office on March 7 (Tuesday) or March 8 (Wednesday). He said the orders of the Supreme Court will be strictly implemented.

The letter was written in response to a letter sent by the election commission for the announcement of the election date in view of the apex court’s verdict.

The Supreme Court, in a 3-2 verdict, ruled that elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab should be held within 90 days.

The verdict said the Governor KP should announce the election date as he signed the summary for the dissolution of the assembly. Regarding Punjab, the court said the governor was not bound as he had not signed the summary.
