Everton will approach the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to inquire why a challenge in the Merseyside derby that they believe should have resulted in a penalty was not investigated further.

Following a challenge by Liverpool’s Joel Matip, attacker Anthony Gordon went over in the box with the game still goalless.

Andy Robertson scored Liverpool’s first goal eight minutes after the incident, and Divock Origi sealed the 2-0 victory.

Everton is now in the relegation zone, with six games remaining.

Frank Lampard’s team is two points behind Burnley, who are in the final relegation spot, despite the fact that the Toffees have a game in hand.

If the challenge had been made on a Liverpool player, Lampard stated after the game that a penalty would have been awarded.

“It was a penalty,” he explained. “You don’t get penalties at Anfield.”

“I believe [the referee] delivers that if it was Mohamed Salah at the Kop end. Anthony was called for a foul.”

PGMOL apologized to Everton earlier this season after they were refused a penalty in their 1-0 loss to Manchester City, despite Rodri seeming to use his hand to control the ball.
