Ronnie O’Sullivan was the Centre of attention in the build-up to the commencement of the 2022 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible.

If he wins, he will tie Stephen Hendry for the most titles in the modern era.

O’Sullivan won the event for the second time in 2020, after winning it the first time in 2001, and he is the No. 2 seed for this year’s tournament, which starts on Saturday.

O’Sullivan won 7-5 against qualifier David Gilbert in his first match at championship No. 7. O’Sullivan came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the match on Sunday, with his best break of the match being a magnificent 122.

His opponent reached the World Championship semi-finals in 2019 and holds one ranking championship — the 2021 Championship League — but he was no match for the six-time winner once he gained control.

O’Sullivan faced No.15 seed Mark Allen in the second round. After the first session, O’Sullivan had a 6-3 lead after a fantastic performance that included a clearance of 131.

He increased his lead to 12-4, and he was in fine form, with Allen having little response to O’Sullivan’s shots. It didn’t take him long to finish up the match on Saturday, winning 13-4 and setting a new World Championship record of 71 wins.

In the quarter-finals, O’Sullivan defeated Stephen Maguire. He took an 11-5 lead on Tuesday evening and finished the match quickly in the third session on Wednesday morning, securing a record-breaking 13th semi-final appearance.

John Higgins, a four-time champion, was his semi-final opponent in a best-of-33 frames match played over four sessions.

Trump won the first frame, but fell behind 4-1 when O’Sullivan grabbed command of the match early on. After the first frame of the evening session, Trump battled back to a 5-4 deficit.

Following that, O’Sullivan was unstoppable, winning seven of the final eight frames on Sunday night to take a 12-5 lead. Trump faces a mountain to climb after he made six half-centuries and a breathtaking 118.
