Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Bournemouth, aided by goals from Kai Havertz and Mason Mount, ended a five-game winless streak for Chelsea in the Premier League.
Graham Potter’s squad experienced a difficult stretch prior to the World Cup, but they returned to Stamford Bridge and defeated the struggling Cherries to go into eighth place, six points behind the top four with one game remaining.
However, the victory came with a price, as defender Reece James walked off after returning from a knee injury that held him out of England’s World Cup campaign.
James dominated the first half, however, he signaled for a replacement early in the second, pointing to his knee, and was replaced by Cesar Azpilicueta.
Potter gave Denis Zakaria his Premier League debut in an effort to prevent Chelsea from suffering a fourth straight league loss for the first time since 1998.
The Swiss midfielder drove Chelsea up the field in the first half, while Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic led the Bournemouth defense in a merry dance.
Havertz scored the game’s first goal in the 16th minute after Sterling’s low cross to the far post was converted by Havertz.
Pulisic should have been awarded a penalty when he was fouled, but referee Simon Hooper denied his claims.
Mount doubled Chelsea’s advantage in the 24th minute with a well-placed shot from the outskirts of the box, and Pulisic had another goal disallowed for a foul committed by Havertz in the buildup.
The Blues were determined to snap their goalless skid and get their season back on track after failing to score in three consecutive games across all competitions.
Mark Travers, the goalkeeper for Bournemouth, did well to deny James following a brilliant run forward, and then did even better to deny Sterling before halftime to keep his club in the game.
As Chelsea attempted to put the game out of reach, Havertz shot wide and Mount forced Travers to make a smart low save from Mount.
Aside from Jaidon Anthony’s late free-kick, which Kepa Arrizabalaga saved, Bournemouth failed to pose a danger in the final moments.
Gary O’Neil’s squad sits in 14th place, only three points above the relegation zone, after suffering a fifth loss in six league games.
