Virgil van Dijk, a defender for Liverpool, has suffered a hamstring injury. As a result, the Dutchman will miss Liverpool’s FA Cup encounter against Wolves on January 7 and is doubtful for their next Premier League game, which is a trip to Brighton on January 14.
The Dutch defender was replaced with a hamstring injury before halfway as Liverpool lost to Brentford 3-1 despite Jurgen Klopp’s precautionary measure.
While a precise return date for the centre back has not yet been announced, the injury is more serious than initially believed.
Liverpool’s defence already looked vulnerable enough this season, so losing Van Dijk is a major setback for the Reds.
Good news for Liverpool, though, is that they expect Roberto Firmino and James Milner to be available for the FA Cup match against Wolves. The experienced Milner has been dealing with a hamstring problem, while the Brazilian has been sidelined with a calf injury.
Cody Gakpo, who joined from PSV Eindhoven at the beginning of January, is also anticipated to be eligible for the cup game and might make his career debut.
Although there were persistent rumours linking the Dutchman to Manchester United, Liverpool were able to intervene and complete the transfer after his outstanding World Cup performance.
While everyone will be focused on winning and advancing on in the FA Cup over the weekend, Liverpool will be perplexed by their delicate injury situation. If it looks like Van Dijk will be off for a while due to injury, they may need to look into the transfer market.
