Christian Atsu‘s Turkish club Hayatspor’s vice-president announced on Monday that the Ghana winger is among the victims of a huge earthquake that killed over 3,000 people in the country and neighboring Syria.

Former Newcastle and Chelsea midfielder Atsu, 31, joined the Super Lig team in September under the direction of Taner Savut, the club’s sports director. “Taner Savut and Christian Atsu are still missing,” Mustafa Ozat said to Play Spor. “They’re attempting to flee,” he continued.

After an initial loan season, Atsu played five seasons at Newcastle before departing for Saudi Arabia in 2021.

“Praying for some good news, @ChristianAtsu20,” the English outfit tweeted.

In September 2019, he received his 60th Black Stars cap.

“We pray for Ghana International Christian Atsu and the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria,” the Ghana Football Association tweeted.

“Considering the challenging position, we continue our efforts to establish communication with officials of Hatayspor and the Turkish Football Federation,” it stated.

Dozens of countries have donated aid after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck earlier on Monday while people were still sleeping and in the midst of frigid weather, which has impeded emergency efforts.
