Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City expressed his delight and appreciation at being named captain of the Belgium national team. Following Eden Hazard’s retirement from international football, the decision was made.
Following Eden Hazard’s retirement from international football, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne said on Tuesday that he was “honored” to be named captain of Belgium.
After Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard, who turned 32 in January, ended his Belgium career following last year’s World Cup, Red Devils coach Domenico Tedesco selected playmaker De Bruyne for the position.
After the tournament, Tedesco, who took over from Roberto Martinez, has added 19-year-olds Romeo Lavia and Zeno Debast to an older team.
De Bruyne told, “It’s an honour for me to be named and represent the country in this way,”
He added, “I’m almost 32. I’ve never considered international retirement. I think I can still bring something to the table and help the youngsters.”
De Bruyne will serve as vice captain alongside Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Chelsea attacker Romelu Lukaku.
After The Red Devils were eliminated from the group stage in Qatar, De Bruyne was one of the players who received criticism.
De Bruyne, who has scored 25 goals in 97 games for Belgium, will make his debut as captain against Sweden on Friday in a Euro 2024 qualifier.
In the campaign for the tournament that will be held in Germany next summer, they will also have to deal with Estonia, Azerbaijan, and Austria.
