Mesut Ozil’s condemnation of Mikel Arteta already shown to be untrue

Mesut Ozil once referred to Mikel Arteta as a teammate at Arsenal, and by all accounts, the two got along fine, but that did not last once the latter became manager.

Arteta expected every player in his squad to give their absolute best effort at all times because he wanted to leave a lasting impression in his first position as senior management. As soon as it became clear he felt Ozil couldn’t give him that, the mercurial midfielder was shown the door in brutal fashion.

Ozil’s departure from Arsenal in late 2020 was not exactly graceful; he was left off of their 25-man Premier League roster. The former Germany international responded with a lengthy statement on Instagram, railing against the team he spent seven and a half years with.

“I’m really disappointed that I haven’t been registered for the Premier League season for the time being,” he wrote. “Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated.

“As I’ve recently discovered, loyalty is hard to come by these days.”

Despite the fact that Ozil did not hold back, his post a day later felt more directed at Arteta. The former Arsenal playmaker publicly wished Arsene Wenger a happy birthday and listed the traits the Frenchman possessed that he felt the current manager, a Spaniard, lacked.
