The USA defeated Canada 12-1 on Monday in their World Baseball Classic pool game after coming back from a shocking loss to Mexico thanks to a three-run home run by Mike Trout.

The star-studded US team was left in disarray on Sunday following an 11-5 thrashing by Mexico that put the reigning champions in danger of being eliminated in the first round.

Nonetheless, the Americans are now just one victory away from moving on to the knock-out stages after a convincing victory over Canada on Monday at Chase Field in Phoenix, which included a nine-run first inning.

The initial three Canadian bats were easily dispatched by US starting baseball pitcher Lance Lynn, thus ending the game in the first inning.

The Yanks then blasted nine runs against Canada starter Mitch Bratt to take a 9-0 lead by unleashing the full fury of their batting order.

With a massive 405-foot rocket to left centre field, American superstar Mike Trout finished up the first inning’s scoring run by driving home Mookie Betts and Cedric Lopez.

Jared Young’s home run to open the second inning gave Canada their first run, but the USA added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to quickly take a 12-1 lead.

Due to the mercy of the Classic, the game was called after 6 1/2 innings.

It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

The first perfect game in the World Baseball Classic was pitched by Puerto Rico’s Jose De Leon and three relievers on Monday in a 10-0 victory over Israel, making tournament history.

Yacksel Rios, Edwin Diaz, and Duane Underwood Jr. completed the Puerto Rican victory after De Leon’s 5 and 2/3 spotless innings.

The victory was secured for Puerto Rico via Enrique Hernandez’s walk-off RBI single.

“I’ve dreamt of a moment like this, to be honest with you,” De Leon said.

“With everything that I’ve been through, I needed a moment like this to let the people in Puerto Rico know that I’m still here to stay and I want to show the world that Jose De Leon is still here,” added De Leon, whose career has been ravaged by injuries.

In other pool play matches on Monday, Great Britain also made history by defeating Colombia 7-5 to secure the nation’s first-ever classic triumph.

“This is the beginning of Chapter 2 for Great Britain baseball and British baseball in general,” said British manager Drew Spencer.

“I think there will be people who can use this moment as inspiration to come out and play the game and to believe that someone with [Great Britain] on the front of their chest can be successful,” Spencer added.
