South Africa handed Bangladesh a resounding defeat, winning by a massive margin of 149 runs in the 23rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023. The thrilling encounter took place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India, on a memorable Tuesday.

The Proteas have been dominating the tournament with four impressive victories, often clinching their wins by substantial margins. Notably, they crushed England with a staggering 229-run win, showcasing their dominance on the world stage.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, faced an uphill battle in their pursuit of the daunting target set by South Africa, needing 383 runs for victory. However, their quest was marred by early setbacks, and they found themselves reeling at a mere 31-3 within just 7.1 overs.

The Bangladeshi batters struggled to withstand the ferocious South African bowling attack, which included Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, and Lizard Williams, all of whom managed to claim at least one wicket.

Despite the adversity, Mahmudullah, aged 37, displayed remarkable composure and temperament. He notched up his third World Cup century, scoring a valiant 111 runs off 111 balls, embellished with 11 fours and four sixes. Nonetheless, his heroics proved insufficient in the face of the colossal target, and Bangladesh was eventually bundled out for 233 runs in 46.4 overs.

South Africa’s commanding performance was underpinned by their formidable batting display, with Quinton de Kock delivering one of the most destructive innings of the tournament. De Kock blazed his way to the highest individual score in the World Cup, amassing a remarkable 174 runs off just 140 deliveries, featuring 15 boundaries and seven towering sixes.

De Kock’s partnership with skipper Aiden Markram, followed by another notable stand with Heinrich Klaasen, contributed to South Africa’s dominance, adding 131 and 142 runs, respectively.

Klaasen assumed the role of the aggressor after De Kock’s departure, amassing 90 runs from 49 balls, including 10 boundaries, two fours, and eight towering sixes. His pursuit of a well-deserved century was cut short when he played a loose shot to Hasan Mahmud’s slow delivery, ultimately caught by Mahmadullah at Deep Back Point.

After Klaasen’s departure, David Miller chipped in, adding a vital six to elevate South Africa’s total to a commanding 382 runs, a target that proved insurmountable for Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladeshi side.

With their current impressive form, South Africa is poised to face a struggling Pakistani team in Chennai on October 27, with a victory potentially securing their place in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Bangladesh is scheduled to take on the Netherlands in Kolkata on October 28, where they will aim to secure their second win of the tournament.

This match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will undoubtedly be remembered as a thrilling encounter that showcased South Africa’s cricketing dominance in the ICC World Cup 2023, leaving fans eagerly anticipating more cricketing spectacles on the global stage.
