Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has drawn parallels between his own playing style and the aggressive approach of current Australia ODI opener, Travis Head.

Head, who recently returned from injury to the World Cup squad, showcased his remarkable hitting skills in an explosive knock against New Zealand on October 28, scoring 109 runs off 67 balls in a match that left spectators in awe. With a unique ability to combine an average over 50 with a strike rate exceeding 110, Head’s style of play has earned him recognition and admiration, including from the legendary Gilchrist himself.

“I see a bit of myself in him,” Gilchrist admitted in an interview

“He’s playing very aggressively, and that was my role as well.” Gilchrist went on to praise Head’s uncanny ability to maintain his power and hand-eye coordination even when it seems like he’s lost the traditional shape of a shot. “He can lose what we term traditional shape of a shot, but because he’s going so aggressively and he’s got such power and great hand-eye coordination, he still gets the ball away,” Gilchrist noted, highlighting Head’s exceptional skills.

The inclusion of Travis Head in Australia’s World Cup squad became a topic of discussion, as he was recovering from an injury at the time. However, his stunning return against New Zealand in Dharamshala put to rest any doubts regarding his form and fitness. Gilchrist believes that Head’s fearless and aggressive style brings a unique dimension to the Australian lineup and could be a key factor in their quest for the World Cup title.

“He clearly made an impact against New Zealand. He’s one of a number of important factors for Australia’s title hopes,” Gilchrist expressed. He acknowledged that consistency might not always be guaranteed with a player of Head’s style but emphasized that it’s about making an impact, even if it means getting out early on occasion. “But as long as everyone is riding that journey with him… they’ll know that when he fires, it’s going to go a long way to helping Australia win,” Gilchrist added.
