Former Pakistan cricket captain Javed Miandad has lambasted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for what he perceives as the “unfair treatment” of the country’s star player, Babar Azam.

Azam recently stepped down from his captaincy position following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Miandad expressed concerns about individuals within the PCB making cricket-related decisions without sufficient ties to the game, citing the damaging consequences of political influence. He emphasized the need for players like Babar Azam to be given respect and honor, advocating for the appointment of a strong manager to support Azam in becoming a better captain.

While criticizing the decision to remove Azam from captaincy, Miandad also pointed out flaws in Azam’s batting strategy. He noted that Azam tends not to attack bowlers from the crease, affecting the rhythm of his batting. Miandad suggested that Azam needs to make slight alterations in his approach, particularly in the positioning of his body while batting.

Miandad offered his guidance to Azam, stating, “If Babar Azam ever wants advice, I am always available.” He highlighted the importance of addressing weaknesses in the nets to build confidence and urged Azam to work on rectifying his mistakes.

In a broader critique of the PCB, Miandad questioned the appointments of recently retired players instead of experienced individuals. He mentioned the presence of retired players like Iqbal Qasim, Mushtaq Mohammad, Sadiq Mohammad, Haroon Rashid, and Shoaib Mohammad, suggesting that these seasoned individuals should be brought forward for the benefit of Pakistan cricket.

Miandad concluded by expressing concern about the lack of cricket expertise in the decision-making process, pointing out the appointment of individuals who may not have extensive cricketing backgrounds. Without naming current management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf, Miandad questioned the level of cricket experience among those managing cricket affairs in the country, stating, “The cricketing affairs are being managed by sugar mill owners.”
