In his debut Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Mayank Yadav, a fast bowler, delivered a ball at a speed of 155.8 kmph during his second over for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing 2024 season.

LSG acquired the 21-year-old at his base price of INR 20 lakh in the IPL auction prior to the 2023 season. He was part of the team last year but was sidelined due to an injury.

In his debut match against the Punjab Kings, Mayank made an immediate impact, bowling a 150 kmph delivery in his first over. He then surpassed this speed in his next over, delivering a 155.8 kph ball to Shikhar Dhawan.

In his opening spell of his IPL career, he outpaced Nandre Burger (153 kmph), Gerald Coetzee (152.3 kmph), Alzarri Joseph (151.2 kmph), and Matheesha Pathirana (150.9 kmph).

Mayank ended the match with figures of 3/27, helping LSG defeat PBKS by 21 runs. He took the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, who scored 42, as well as Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma.

Only one other Indian fast bowler, Umran Malik, has recorded a faster speed. The 24-year-old, who also emerged from obscurity, reached a top speed of 157 kph in the 2022 IPL.

Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has praised the young player, stating that India has discovered its fastest-ever bowler in Mayank.

Mayank made his domestic debut in 2021 and has so far played one first-class match for Delhi, along with 17 List A matches and 10 T20s. He has an outstanding record in the shorter formats, having taken 34 wickets in List A cricket at an average of 21.55 and an economy rate of 5.35.
