MS Dhoni is taking a cautious stance regarding his participation in future IPL seasons, awaiting the finalization of the league’s auction and retention rules for 2025.
Dhoni, who celebrated his 43rd birthday in July, shared his thoughts during an event in Hyderabad, stating, “There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team.”
The BCCI convened with team owners and officials in Mumbai to deliberate on various regulations, including the Impact Player rule, retention quotas, and the scheduling of the mega auction.
Speculation about Dhoni’s IPL tenure has been a recurring theme at season’s end in recent years. The issue of leadership succession at Chennai Super Kings was partly resolved when Dhoni passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad earlier this year.
Under Gaikwad’s leadership, CSK finished just shy of the playoffs, ranking fifth with the same points as the fourth-placed RCB but with a lower net run rate.
In the previous season, Dhoni assumed the role of a finisher, frequently entering the fray in the closing overs to deliver powerful hits, boasting a strike rate of 220.54 and remaining not out in most of his innings.
