Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout on Monday to reach the World Cup last 16 after their Round of 32 tie ended 1-1 following extra time, setting up a meeting with co-hosts Canada.
Ismael Saibari scored the winning penalty after Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s spot kick, sending Morocco through after a dramatic match that went to extra time following a stoppage-time equalizer.
Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui and Dutch substitute Justin Kluivert missed their penalties, while Bart Verbruggen appeared to save Soufiane Rahimi’s attempt. However, the ball slipped under him and crossed the line.

Quinten Timber then missed the Netherlands’ fourth penalty, while Achraf Hakimi hit the post with a chance to win it. Saibari kept his nerve and secured Morocco’s place in the next round.
The penalty shootout followed a thrilling match in Monterrey that swung back and forth. Cody Gakpo scored in the second half, but Issa Diop equalized in stoppage time, and neither side scored in extra time.
Morocco fans celebrated at the final whistle in Monterrey, while many local supporters also backed the African team throughout the match.

Hakimi said they are used to this kind of match and know the importance of being focused mentally and physically. He also thanked Mexico and Moroccan fans for their support.
Morocco created better chances in the first half, but Verbruggen made several strong saves, including stopping efforts from Ayoub Bouaddi and Neil El Aynaoui.
At the other end, Bounou saved a long-range shot from Micky van de Ven.
Hakimi hit the crossbar and tested Verbruggen again as Morocco caused problems from the flanks. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman later brought on Wout Weghorst to strengthen the attack.
Morocco had strong support throughout, with many Mexican fans supporting them and chanting “No era penal,” referring to a controversial 2014 World Cup moment.
