YouTube is seeking to reclaim the mantle by refocusing on long-form content in YouTube Music, according to the latest reports.

Although there is no obvious evidence of these changes on the YouTube Music app interface, in-development code strings within the most recent app update provide some insight into Google’s efforts to enable podcasts.

The podcasts will be available in the United States “in the near future,” according to YouTube management. There are also hints of this in YouTube Music app version 5.48.

Furthermore, various text strings imply that users will soon be able to add podcasts to the listening queue in the same way that they can add songs.

The content is also suggested to be displayed on the Library tab, alongside downloaded tracks. This will further blur the line between music and podcasts, resulting in a new hybrid.

You will also notice a change in the Settings menu that will allow you to play podcast videos audio-only. It appears to be very similar to the currently available setting that disables music video playback.

YouTube Music is also expected to enable long-form, content-optimized features such as extended countdowns with the sleep timer.

The podcast concentration will be obvious in the YouTube Music app search box, which is worth noting.

Moreover, the prompt wording will be changed from “Search songs, albums, and artists” to “Search songs, artists, and podcasts” when podcasts roll out.

The company is assisting creators in creating a launch-day-ready library of streamable material by giving them the required tools to convert playlists into shows via YouTube Studio.
