Threads is systematically addressing the missing features it had at launch, with the latest addition being hashtags. Meta’s large text-based social network is currently in the process of testing hashtags for tagging topics or conversations.
When entering a hashtag with a topic, it won’t display as a hashtagged word; instead, it appears as a blue-text hyperlink. Meta is currently testing this feature exclusively in Australia as an initial “limited test” before its global release.
Users using Threads‘ recently introduced tagging feature are limited to including only one topic per post. This restriction seems to be a measure to prevent spamming tactics for broader visibility. This constraint may be welcomed by users who appreciate the neat appearance of threads or those who dislike in-line hashtags. Meta has expressed its dedication to improving this feature over time, suggesting that this initial version is subject to change.
This week, Threads experienced a series of updates. Meta provided the choice to prevent Threads posts from showing up on Instagram and Facebook, enabled the independent removal of Threads accounts from Instagram, and introduced pinned posts for all users. Furthermore, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri continued to leave users uncertain about the future of Threads’ direct messages.
The introduction of these features has begun to attract users back to the Threads platform, which experienced a decline a few months ago. In October, the Twitter competitor successfully doubled both its daily active users and monthly active users. The application now boasts 33 million daily active users and 120 million monthly active users.
While the numbers are still a considerable distance from Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitious target of reaching 1 billion users, Threads deserves acknowledgment for the progress it has made.
